Ahhh, that’s so cool. JHB City Parks actually just planted a bunch of those at Kingston Frost park here in Brixton. They are beautiful!

Apparently when old Jacaranda trees die down they are replaced by Van Wykshout trees. A lovely indigenous tree with beautiful purple flowers and ideal for pavement planting as they have a deep root system, similar to Jacarandas. They don’t lift the pavements with spreading roots. Well-established Van Wykshout trees can be seen in Monument Park, Pretoria.

I don’t know if there was ever serious talk of cutting them down. But there was definitely a rule in place at some point that new jacarandas can’t be planted. I’m actually not sure where that situation stands now…I think the conventional wisdom has shifted in recent years and more people agree that we need to try to preserve all trees, indigenous and otherwise, to help keep temperatures down and fight climate change, etc.

They are incredibly beautiful buildings — designed by Herbert Baker, one of SA’s most famous architects.
